The world today has been seized by a demand for Revolution, and calls for social justice can be heard on streets across the globe. Remixing symbols, slogans and pixelated computer graphics is the signature of artist Lisa Anne Auerbach’s disruptive knits. This sweater embodies a strident call to action, with its instructive text: ‘What’s All this Talk of Dying for Revolution? Live for it.’ The battle-cry, ‘All power to the people Bring the war home’ appears round the lower edge. Wear your message on your chest and your heart on your sleeve.

ABOUT THE 2018 COLLECTION:
The first Rudi Gernreich capsule collection (created in 2018) comes from LA-based artist Lisa Anne Auerbach. Best known for her knit sweaters carrying political missives – a unique twinset bearing the message ‘What’s all this talk of dying for Revolution? Live for it’ is now part of LA Hammer Museum’s permanent collection – Auerbach takes Gernreich’s political activism and quite literally knits it into the fabric of her designs.
LISA SAYS: “I’M INTERESTED IN THE WAYS THAT POLITICAL IDEAS CAN BE WOVEN INTO GARMENTS, AND MUCH OF MY KNITTING WORK INCLUDES SLOGANS, JOKES, AND IMAGERY THAT EMBODY VOICE. RUDI GERNREICH MADE GARMENTS THAT WERE, AT THEIR CORE, POLITICAL STATEMENTS ABOUT FREEDOM, GENDER, AND THE POWER THAT FASHION HAS TO TRANSFORM ITS WEARER. ON MY MOST POSITIVE DAYS, I BELIEVE THAT CLOTHING HAS THE ABILITY TO CHANGE THE WORLD, SOMETHING IT SEEMS THAT RUDI ALSO IMAGINED. HIS WORK OUTSIDE OF FASHION IS INSPIRING, FROM HIS ROLE WITHIN THE MATTACHINE SOCIETY TO HIS SUPPORT OF THE ACLU. IT’S IMPORTANT FOR ART TO TAKE AN ACTIVE ROLE IN DEFINING, QUESTIONING, AND CRITIQUING CULTURAL VALUES, AND WHEN A FOR-PROFIT BUSINESS LIKE A FASHION BRAND DOES THIS, IT’S IMPRESSIVE. IT’S AN HONOR TO BE PART OF THE RELAUNCH OF A BRAND THAT CONTINUES TO AGGRESSIVELY INTERROGATE FASHION."
